Apple Return Policy Guide: Receipt, Refunds and Return Window
Apple’s return window is 14 days — shorter than most of the retailers on this site. That window applies whether you bought online or in an Apple Store, and it starts from the day the product was delivered or handed to you, not from when you open or use it. This guide explains what you need to return an Apple purchase, how the process works online versus in-store, and what to keep as proof of purchase for warranty purposes after the return window closes. Returns & Refunds is independent and is not affiliated with Apple.
Policy details can change — always confirm at Apple’s official returns and refunds page or the Apple U.S. Retail Sales Policy before starting a return.
Quick Answer
- Return window: 14 days from the date you receive the product
- Item must be in original condition with all parts, accessories, and packaging
- Online returns: enter your order number or serial number to start — Apple provides a free prepaid label
- In-store: bring the product and proof of purchase to an Apple Store
- Refund typically issued within 10 business days of Apple inspecting the return
- Apple Gift Cards, electronic software downloads, and Apple Developer Connection products are not returnable
Return Window Overview
Apple’s 14-day window is the same whether you bought through the Apple Online Store or a physical Apple Store. The clock starts from the date you receive the product — your shipping confirmation or in-store receipt establishes this date.
Fourteen days is tight. If you are buying an iPhone, Mac, or iPad as a gift that will be given later, the return window starts when the product is delivered to you, not when it is given to the recipient. This is worth planning for if you buy in advance.
| Purchase type | Return window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Online Store (U.S.) | 14 days from delivery | Return by mail with prepaid label, or visit an Apple Store |
| Apple Store (in-store purchase) | 14 days from purchase date | Return to any Apple Store |
| Holiday extended window (when active) | Check official Apple page | Dates vary by year — verify before assuming any extension applies |
Apple has offered holiday extended return windows in past years. For example, items received between certain November and December dates could be returned into January. These dates change each year and are not guaranteed — always check Apple’s current policy page during the holiday period.
How to Return an Apple Product
Online return (via Apple Online Store)
- Go to Apple’s Returns & Refunds page and enter your order number or serial number.
- Follow the prompts to initiate the return. Apple provides a free prepaid shipping label.
- Pack the item in its original packaging with all included accessories and documentation.
- Attach the label and drop off the package at the carrier shown on the label.
- Keep your drop-off receipt until the refund is confirmed.
- Apple will issue the refund after inspecting the returned item.
In-store return
- Bring the product to an Apple Store.
- Have your receipt or order confirmation. Apple can also look up purchases made through your Apple ID.
- The product must be in original condition with all parts, accessories, and packaging.
- An Apple associate will inspect the item and process the return.
If you are returning a phone or other connected device: sign out of your Apple ID, disable Find My, and remove any associated wireless service before the return. Apple’s policy notes that security-locked devices may be refused if the lock features cannot be disabled. You are also responsible for canceling any wireless service separately — returning the hardware does not cancel the carrier contract.
Large quantity returns: if you are returning 10 or more of the same product, Apple requires you to return them to the original Apple Store rather than by mail. Contact Apple in advance for guidance on this type of return.
Returning Without a Receipt
For Apple Online Store purchases, your Apple ID order history serves as your proof of purchase — you do not need a paper receipt. Your order number, accessible in your account, is what Apple uses to identify the purchase when you start a return online.
For in-store Apple purchases, your receipt or the order in your Apple ID history is the primary proof. Apple associates can look up purchases made through your Apple ID. If you bought the product without creating an Apple ID or through a different account, the paper receipt is important to keep.
If you received the product as a gift, the Apple Gift Returns page allows you to initiate a return. Apple Gift Cards are issued for gift returns rather than a refund to the original payment method. See also: returning an item without a receipt.
Refund Timing
Apple processes refunds after inspecting the returned item. The timing then depends on the original payment method:
| Payment method | Refund timing |
|---|---|
| Standard payment (card, Apple Pay) | Within 10 business days of inspection |
| Cash or cash equivalent over $750 | Refund check mailed within 10 business days |
| Gift receipt | Apple Gift Card issued |
| Apple Account balance | Refunded to Apple Account, or Apple Gift Card if unable |
Apple sends an email confirmation when the refund is issued. For card refunds, your bank may take additional days to process the credit and show it on your statement. If you have not received the confirmation email or the refund has not appeared after 10 business days from when Apple confirmed it was issued, contact Apple directly. Important Exceptions
Apple’s return policy excludes several categories:
- Apple Gift Cards — not returnable or redeemable for cash (except where required by law)
- Electronic software downloads — not returnable once downloaded
- Subscriptions to the Software-Up-To-Date program — not returnable
- Apple Developer Connection products — not returnable
- ZEISS Optical Inserts (Prescription) — not eligible for standard returns; Apple handles these on behalf of ZEISS through a separate process (not in-store)
- Security-locked devices — Apple may refuse a return if Find My or other lock features cannot be disabled before return
- Products purchased through other retailers — returns for products bought at Best Buy, Target, Amazon, or other retailers must go back to those retailers under their own policies, not to Apple
Apple’s return policy applies specifically to the Apple Online Store and Apple Stores. If you bought an Apple product elsewhere, that retailer’s return policy applies — not Apple’s 14-day window.
What Proof of Purchase to Keep
Apple products benefit from having detailed proof of purchase records, particularly because the 14-day return window closes quickly and warranty coverage extends well beyond it. Keep these:
- Order confirmation email — includes order number, purchase date, item name, and price paid
- Order number — needed to start an online return and to initiate a warranty claim later
- Serial number — shown on the device itself, on the box, and in Settings on Apple devices. Note this down separately — it is the key identifier for warranty claims
- Receipt or in-store purchase confirmation — save the physical receipt or photograph it; for in-store purchases this is often the only paper record
- Drop-off receipt or return tracking — keep until the refund is confirmed
- AppleCare documentation — if you purchased AppleCare+, keep the confirmation and the coverage end date

Frequently Asked Questions
I bought an iPhone at Best Buy — is the return window 14 days (Apple) or 15 days (Best Buy)?
If you bought the iPhone at Best Buy, Best Buy’s return policy applies. The return goes to Best Buy, not to Apple, and the 14-day activatable device window at Best Buy applies. Apple’s 14-day return window covers only items purchased through the Apple Online Store or directly from an Apple Store.
Can I return an opened iPhone or MacBook to Apple?
Apple’s policy requires items to be returned in original condition with all parts, accessories, and packaging. The policy does not automatically exclude opened products — but the item should be undamaged and complete. If you have used the device and want to return it within 14 days, sign out of your Apple ID, disable Find My, and bring everything the device came with. Apple’s decision on whether to accept an opened return may depend on the specific item and its condition.
How long does an Apple refund take after I return the product?
Apple states refunds are processed within 10 business days of receiving and inspecting the returned item. For card payments, your bank may then take additional days to post the credit. For cash returns over $750, Apple mails a refund check within 10 business days. If you have not received a refund confirmation from Apple after the inspection period, contact Apple support.
What proof of purchase does Apple need for a warranty claim after the return window closes?
For warranty claims on Apple hardware, the order confirmation or receipt showing the purchase date is the primary document. The serial number is also required — it links the device to your purchase record. Apple can often look up warranty coverage using the serial number alone, but having the purchase date record in your own files is useful if there is any dispute about when the warranty started.
I received an Apple product as a gift. Can I return it?
Yes. Apple has a gift return process. You can initiate a gift return through the Apple gift returns page. The original purchase price is not shown during the gift return process. The refund for a gift return is issued as an Apple Gift Card rather than back to the original payment method used by the purchaser.
Does returning an Apple device cancel any associated subscriptions?
No. Returning the hardware does not cancel any associated services, carrier plans, or Apple subscriptions. Cancel Apple One, Apple TV+, iCloud, or any other subscription separately through your Apple ID account settings. Cancel any wireless carrier plan directly with the carrier. Do not assume anything is automatically canceled when you hand over the device.
