Best Buy Return Policy Guide: Receipt, Refunds and Return Window
Best Buy’s return policy is shorter than most people expect — the standard window is just 15 days for regular customers, and that changes significantly if you have a paid membership. The rules around restocking fees are also specific to certain product types, and opened software and games follow their own separate path. This guide breaks down what the policy actually says, by product type and membership tier, so you know where you stand before you buy. Returns & Refunds is independent and is not affiliated with Best Buy.

- Opened software, movies, music, games, and books: exchange for identical item only
Return Window Overview
Best Buy’s return window depends on your membership level. The standard 15-day window is noticeably shorter than what most other major retailers offer, which means acting quickly matters more here than at a lot of other stores.
| Customer type | Most products | Activatable devices |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (no membership) | 15 days | 14 days |
| My Best Buy Plus member | 60 days | 14 days |
| My Best Buy Total member | 60 days | 14 days |
Activatable devices — a category that includes cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, and cellular wearables — have a fixed 14-day window for every customer. Membership does not extend this window.
Holiday window: For purchases made between October 31 and December 31, 2025, most items could be returned through January 15, 2026. Exceptions included activatable devices (cell phones and tablets on carrier contracts), AppleCare+ plans, and holiday-specific products such as artificial trees and lights. Holiday extension dates apply only to the holiday season and change each year — check Best Buy’s current policy for any active extension.
How to Return a Best Buy Item
In-store return
- Bring the item to any Best Buy store.
- Have your packing slip, receipt, or the credit/debit card used for the purchase.
- Best Buy can look up purchases made with a card or through a Best Buy account.
- An associate will inspect the item and process the return or exchange.
Online return (mail)
- Log in to your Best Buy account and go to your order history.
- Locate the item and initiate a return.
- Print the prepaid return shipping label provided by Best Buy.
- Pack the item, attach the label, and drop it off at an authorized carrier location.
- Keep the drop-off receipt until the refund is confirmed.
Condition matters at Best Buy: items must be returned in like-new condition. Items that are damaged, dented, scratched, unsanitary, or missing major components may be refused at the returns desk. If the product is a phone or tablet, remove your personal accounts and data before bringing it in.
Returning Without a Receipt
Best Buy can look up purchases using your Best Buy account or the card you used to pay. If they can verify the purchase, the return may proceed — but without proof of purchase, the outcome may differ:
- A valid email address may be required
- Refunds without proof of purchase may be issued as store credit rather than to the original payment method
- State taxes and fees may not be refunded
- Best Buy may decline the return without adequate proof
Your Best Buy account order history is the most useful fallback if you do not have the receipt — it serves as direct proof of purchase. Saving your confirmation email when you order is the simplest protection. See also: returning an item without a receipt and proof of purchase explained.
Refund Timing
For standard card payments, Best Buy releases the refund quickly on their end — the delay is usually on your bank’s side:
| Payment method | Approximate refund timing |
|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | Up to 10 days (bank processing time) |
| Cash payment over $800 | Check mailed within 10 business days |
| Check payment over $250 | Refund check mailed within 10 business days |
| Debit card without major credit card logo, over $250 | Refund check mailed within 10 business days |
For debit card returns, Best Buy states they release the funds to your financial institution promptly after processing. The remaining wait is your bank’s processing time, which varies. If the refund has not appeared after 10 days, contact your bank first, then Best Buy if needed. See also: refund taking too long.
Restocking Fees
Best Buy charges restocking fees on opened returns of specific item categories. There is no restocking fee if the item is returned unopened, or if the purchase was made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, or South Carolina, or where prohibited by law.
| Item category (opened returns) | Restocking fee |
|---|---|
| Activatable devices (cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, cellular wearables) | $45 |
| Drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders | 15% |
| Projectors and projector screens | 15% |
| Electric bikes and electric mopeds | 15% |
| Golf launch monitors | 15% |
| Premium scooters, mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs | 15% |
| Leg and body recovery systems | 15% |
| Premium cold tubs, premium saunas | 15% |
| Special-order products | 15% |
| All other items (unopened) | No fee |
Restocking fees are calculated based on the purchase price. The fee is shown before you confirm the return online or can be confirmed by the associate in-store.
Important Exceptions
Some items at Best Buy cannot be returned at all once purchased:
- Custom and personalized orders
- Items marked as Final Sale
- Non-subscription digital content — includes digital games (excluding Microsoft Office)
- Codes and prepaid cards — including third-party gift cards and prepaid phone cards
- Vehicle replacement key fobs
- Memberships
- Trading cards — including Pokémon cards
- Products with 300 or greater watt-hour battery capacity
- Golf carts and utility terrain vehicles
- Plumbing items
Opened physical media: opened copies of software, movies, music, video games, books, and video game guides can be exchanged only for an identical item — they cannot be returned for a refund.
What Proof of Purchase to Keep
Given Best Buy’s shorter standard return window, having your proof ready quickly is more important here than at retailers with 90-day windows:
- Receipt or packing slip — the primary document for in-store and mail returns
- Best Buy account order history — accessible online; contains full order details
- Order confirmation email — save it to a receipts folder immediately after purchase
- Payment card used — Best Buy can look up the purchase using the card
- Return authorization — if starting a mail return, save the confirmation you receive
- Drop-off receipt — keep until the refund posts
- Serial number (for phones, cameras, and computers) — note before returning the device

- Log the purchase date and your membership-level return window
- Get a reminder before the 15-day or 14-day deadline closes
- Attach the receipt or order confirmation immediately after buying

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I return a phone to Best Buy after 14 days?
No. Activatable devices — including cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, and cellular wearables — have a 14-day return window for all customers regardless of membership. This window is shorter than the standard 15 days and does not extend even for My Best Buy Plus or Total members. After 14 days, a manufacturer warranty claim is the main available option if the device develops a fault.
Does My Best Buy Plus or Total membership extend the return window on all products?
Most products, yes — from 15 days to 60 days. Activatable devices (cell phones, tablets, hotspots, cellular wearables) remain at 14 days regardless of membership. Marketplace seller products are excluded from the membership extension. Non-returnable items are also unaffected by membership status.
I bought a video game at Best Buy and already opened it. Can I return it?
Once a physical video game has been opened, it cannot be returned for a refund. Opened physical copies of software, video games, music, movies, and books can only be exchanged for the identical item — the same title or product. If the item is defective rather than unwanted, that is a different situation and worth asking Best Buy customer service about directly.
Will Best Buy charge a restocking fee on a camera I opened and used once?
Yes. Digital cameras and camera lenses are on the 15% restocking fee list for opened returns. This applies as long as the item is returned within the eligible return window. If the purchase was made in AL, CO, HI, IA, MS, OH, OK, or SC, no restocking fee applies. Returning the camera unopened avoids the fee entirely.
Can I return a Best Buy item without a receipt?
Best Buy may accept a return without a receipt if they can look up the purchase through your account or the original payment card. Without proof of purchase, the refund may be issued as store credit rather than to the original payment method, state taxes may not be refunded, and the return may require an email address on file. Best Buy can also decline the return if the purchase cannot be verified.
What should I do before returning a laptop or tablet to Best Buy?
Remove all personal accounts and data before returning a laptop, tablet, or phone. For a laptop, sign out of all accounts and perform a factory reset or OS reinstall if appropriate. For a phone or tablet, remove the Apple ID or Google account and factory reset the device. Best Buy may refuse a return on a device with security locks or active accounts that cannot be disabled.
