Save this date and your receipt in the Return & Refund Tracker app so you have everything ready if you need to make a claim.

This is an estimate. The calculator uses the purchase date and warranty length you enter. Always refer to the actual warranty documentation that came with your product for the exact terms and start date.

How Warranty Expiry Is Calculated

Most manufacturer warranties run for a set number of months or years from the date of purchase. A one-year warranty purchased on 15 March 2024 expires on 15 March 2025. The start date is almost always the purchase date shown on the original receipt — not the date you started using the product, or the date it was delivered.

Some warranties work differently:

  • Registration-based warranties — some manufacturers require you to register the product within a set period (often 30 to 90 days of purchase) for the warranty to be valid or to receive an extended term
  • Extended warranties — paid-for extensions typically start the day the standard warranty ends, adding additional months or years
  • Labour vs parts coverage — some warranties distinguish between parts (covered longer) and labour charges (covered for a shorter period)
  • Refurbished and second-hand products — warranties on used products often start from the original purchase date or the refurbishment date, not when you bought it second-hand

Always keep the warranty card, warranty terms document, and the original receipt together so you can confirm the exact coverage period when you need it.

Why Proof of Purchase Matters for Warranty Claims

The single most common reason warranty claims are rejected or delayed is the absence of a clear proof of purchase showing the purchase date. The manufacturer needs to confirm that the product was bought within the warranty period — and without a dated document, they cannot verify this.

Accepted by most manufacturers

  • Original receipt (printed or digital)
  • Order confirmation email
  • Invoice from the seller

Sometimes accepted

  • Bank or credit card statement
  • Retailer account order history
  • Packing slip from online delivery

A bank statement can confirm that you made a payment to the retailer on a specific date, but it does not confirm which product you bought. Manufacturers may accept it as supporting evidence alongside other documentation, but it is rarely sufficient on its own. Read our full guide on what counts as proof of purchase.

What to Keep for a Warranty Claim

Store these documents together from the moment you buy a product:

  • Original receipt or order confirmation — showing the purchase date, retailer, and item description
  • Product serial number — usually on a label on the product itself, inside the battery compartment, or on the original packaging
  • Model number — often on the same label as the serial number
  • Warranty card or terms document — came in the box; states the exact coverage period and what is included
  • Warranty registration confirmation — if you registered the product, keep the confirmation email or reference number
  • Original packaging — not always required to initiate a claim, but useful if you need to ship the product for repair

See the full preparation guide: Warranty claim checklist.

Common Warranty Claim Mistakes

  • Not registering the product — some manufacturers void or reduce coverage if you do not register within the required period. Check the warranty terms on the day you buy something.
  • Losing the receipt before the warranty expires — paper receipts fade and are easily lost. A photograph of the receipt taken immediately is a reliable backup.
  • Assuming the warranty is still active — without tracking the purchase date, many people attempt warranty claims on products that have been out of warranty for months. The calculator above helps you avoid this.
  • Contacting the retailer instead of the manufacturer — for manufacturing defects during the warranty period, the claim usually goes directly to the manufacturer, not the retailer. Check the warranty document for the correct contact.
  • Describing the fault incorrectly — accidental damage, water damage, and physical damage are typically excluded. A vague description of a fault can lead to a claim being assessed as accidental damage and rejected. Be specific about how and when the fault first appeared.
  • Sending the product before getting a claim reference — always contact the manufacturer first, receive a claim reference or returns authorisation number, and follow their specific returns process. Sending without authorisation can complicate the claim.

Track Warranty Expiry in Return & Refund Tracker

The calculator gives you the estimated expiry date. The Return & Refund Tracker app lets you save it alongside your receipt and get a reminder before the warranty closes.

  • Log each purchase with the purchase date and price
  • Record the warranty expiry date and get a reminder 30 days before
  • Attach a photo of the receipt and warranty card
  • Note the product serial number so it is ready when you need it
  • Track any repair or claim until it is resolved

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the warranty start on the purchase date or when I start using the product?

In most cases, the warranty starts on the purchase date shown on the receipt, not the date you begin using the product. If the purchase date is not clear — for example, if you received the item as a gift — the manufacturer may use the date of manufacture as the start date, which can reduce your effective warranty period. Always activate or register the product promptly after purchase if registration is available.

Does a warranty transfer if I buy a second-hand product?

Manufacturer warranties typically do not automatically transfer to a new owner. Some manufacturers allow warranty transfers with proof of original purchase and a transfer request, but this varies by brand. If you are buying a second-hand product and the warranty matters, check the manufacturer’s policy on transfers before purchasing.

What if I cannot find my receipt when making a warranty claim?

Contact the retailer first — many can look up the transaction using the payment card or your account. If you bought online, the order confirmation email or your order history page is usually accepted as proof of purchase. A bank or credit card statement showing the transaction is often accepted as supporting evidence. See our full guide on what counts as proof of purchase for all options.

Is this calculator accurate for all products?

The calculator provides an estimate based on the date and warranty length you enter. Actual warranty terms are set by individual manufacturers and can vary — some products have different warranty periods for different components, and some warranties have conditions (such as registration or authorised repair requirements) that affect validity. Always refer to the warranty documentation supplied with your specific product for the exact terms.

Can I still claim after the warranty expires?

Once the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, your options depend on the laws in your country. In many countries, consumer protection law gives you rights to repair or replacement for faulty goods beyond the manufacturer’s warranty period — sometimes for several years after purchase. These rights apply regardless of the warranty period and cannot be excluded by the manufacturer. Contact a consumer advice organisation in your country for guidance specific to your situation.
