Target Return Policy Guide: Receipt, Refunds and Return Window
Target’s return policy has a generous standard window, and if you have a Target Circle Card or Target Circle 360 membership, that window extends by an additional 30 days on most items. But electronics and phones follow different rules entirely — and Apple and Beats products have their own shorter timeline. This guide explains what applies to your purchase and how to make the process straightforward. Returns & Refunds is independent and is not affiliated with Target.
Policy details can change — always confirm at Target’s official return policy page before starting a return.
Quick Answer
- Most items: 90 days from delivery or in-store purchase
- Target Circle Card holders and Target Circle 360 members: 120 days on most items
- Target Owned Brands: one year with receipt
- Electronics and entertainment (excluding Apple & Beats): 30 days
- Apple & Beats products: 14 days
- Mobile phones: 14 days (restocking fee of up to $35 may apply)
- Refunds to a Target Circle Card: up to 2 days; third-party credit card: up to 5 days
Return Window Overview
The 90-day standard window covers most items Target sells. The window starts from the delivery date for online orders, or the purchase date for in-store purchases.
Target Circle Card holders (debit or credit card) and Target Circle 360 members receive an extra 30 days on nearly all items, bringing most purchases to a 120-day window. This applies to purchases made with the Target Circle Card at Target stores and Target.com. The extended window does not apply to Target Owned Brand items, which already carry a one-year return window with receipt.
| Item or purchase type | Standard window | With Target Circle Card / Circle 360 |
|---|---|---|
| Most items | 90 days | 120 days |
| Target Owned Brands (with receipt) | 1 year | 1 year |
| Electronics & entertainment (excl. Apple & Beats) | 30 days | 60 days |
| Apple & Beats products | 14 days | 44 days |
| Mobile phones | 14 days | 44 days |
| Target Plus Partners | 30 days | 60 days |
Holiday and limited-time-only collections may have modified return policies — check the item description or your receipt for any specific terms.
How to Return a Target Item
In-store return
- Bring the item to the returns desk at any Target store.
- Have one of the following: receipt, barcode from the Target app or Target.com, delivery confirmation email, or the original payment card.
- Target associates can look up purchases using the payment card used, your Target account, or a barcode from the app.
- Receive your refund or exchange at the desk.
Online return (mail)
- Log in to your Target account and go to Orders.
- Find the item and select Return.
- Follow the prompts — Target provides a prepaid return label.
- Print the label, pack the item, and drop it off at the carrier shown.
- Keep your drop-off receipt until the refund is confirmed.
- Processing time for mail returns adds 7–10 business days after Target receives the item.
Certain items purchased at Target Optical, Warby Parker, Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target Tech locations must be returned or exchanged at those specific areas rather than the general returns desk.
Returning Without a Receipt
Target offers several ways to look up a purchase if you do not have the original receipt. The most reliable options are:
- Target app or Target.com — purchase history shows a barcode that can be scanned at the returns desk
- Original payment card — Target can look up the transaction using the card
- Order confirmation email — for online purchases
- Gift receipt — shows what was purchased and when, without the original price
Returns processed without a receipt may be approved at Target’s discretion, and the refund may be issued at the current selling price as a merchandise return card. This can be less than what was originally paid. See also: returning an item without a receipt.
Refund Timing
In-store returns that are approved immediately are refunded based on the original payment method. For mail-in returns, the timeline includes shipping time plus Target’s processing time once they receive the item.
| Payment method | Approximate refund timing |
|---|---|
| Target Circle Card | Up to 2 days after approval |
| Third-party credit card | Up to 5 days after approval |
| Mail-in return (all methods) | 7–10 business days after Target receives the item |
If your refund has not appeared within the timeframe above, check with your bank or card provider first, as processing times can vary. If the return was via mail, confirm in your Target account that the return has been received and processed. See also: refund taking too long.
Important Exceptions
Some items are not eligible for return at Target:
- Trading cards and trading card accessories — not returnable
- Open collectibles — not returnable once opened
- Personalized items — made to specification, not returnable
- Digital downloads — not returnable
- Unsealed breast pumps — not returnable
- Specialty gift cards and pre-paid gift cards — not returnable or redeemable for cash, except where required by law
Mobile phones: a restocking fee of up to $35 may apply on mobile phone returns, even within the 14-day window. Check the terms at purchase or the product listing for specifics.
Target Plus Partners: items sold by Target Plus Marketplace partners follow a 30-day return window and may have their own return conditions shown on the product listing. Target Plus items are labeled clearly in search results and on product pages.
What Proof of Purchase to Keep
Target makes it relatively easy to retrieve purchase records through your account, but having your own copy is still worth doing for any significant purchase:
- Receipt or email order confirmation — shows purchase date, item, and price paid
- Target account order history — accessible via app or website; generates the barcode needed for in-store returns
- Payment card used — Target can look up the transaction using the card at the returns desk
- Return drop-off receipt (mail returns) — keep until refund is confirmed
- Serial number (for electronics and phones) — note it before returning the device

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I return an Apple product bought at Target to Target, or does it go to Apple?
Apple and Beats products purchased at Target are returnable to Target, not to Apple. The return window at Target is 14 days from delivery or purchase (44 days for Target Circle Card holders). After that window closes, a return would need to go through Apple’s own return or warranty process, not Target.
Does the Target Circle 360 membership extend the return window the same way the Target Circle Card does?
Yes. Target Circle 360 members receive the same 30-day extension as Target Circle Card holders, bringing most returns to a 120-day window. The extension applies to nearly all items but does not extend the 14-day window for phones, and does not override the one-year window for Target Owned Brands, which is already longer.
What is the return window for Target Owned Brand products?
Target Owned Brand items can be returned within one year of purchase with a receipt. This applies regardless of whether you have a Target Circle Card. The one-year window covers defects and customer satisfaction — it is one of the more generous policies for store-brand products in US retail.
Can I return a Target.com order to a physical Target store?
Yes. Most online Target orders can be returned to any Target store. Bring the item with your delivery confirmation email, account barcode, or the original payment card. The store can look up the transaction and process the return without a printed receipt in most cases.
Is there a restocking fee on Target returns?
For most items, there is no restocking fee. Mobile phones are an exception — a restocking fee of up to $35 may apply on phone returns, even within the 14-day window. Check the product listing or the terms on your receipt for phone-specific details.
How do I return a Target Plus Partner item?
Target Plus Partner items (sold by third-party sellers on Target.com) have a 30-day return window. Return these items through your Target.com account order history in the same way as a standard Target return. The seller’s specific return conditions are shown on the product listing and may differ from standard Target items.
