Some items aren’t returnable at all: Home Depot gift cards, cut flowers and floral arrangements, wallpaper and flooring samples, utility trailers, whole-house and stationary generators, and custom-made products (Home Depot’s policy gives paint samples as an example). Some products also show their own return terms on the product page, so check it before you buy.

The 48-hour rule for major appliances

If a refrigerator, washer, dryer, range, dishwasher, or built-in microwave arrives damaged or doesn’t work, inspect it at delivery and call Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 within 48 hours (weekends excluded). After that, returns aren’t accepted even for unopened appliances, and your remedy is the manufacturer’s warranty. Note any visible damage on the delivery paperwork before you sign.

How to return an item to Home Depot

In store

  1. Bring the item to the service desk at any Home Depot store, with packaging and accessories if you have them.
  2. Bring your receipt, the order confirmation email with the barcode, or the card you paid with.
  3. Bring a government-issued photo ID; it’s required for no-receipt returns and often requested anyway.
  4. The refund goes back to your original payment method at the desk.

Online orders

  1. Go to your order on homedepot.com (or the app) and start a return.
  2. Either take it to a store (fastest), or ship it back using the instructions provided.
  3. Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number until the refund arrives.

How long a Home Depot refund takes

How you returned itTiming
In storeCredit issued at the time of return; 2–10 business days to post depending on payment method
By mail or carrierAbout 7 business days to process after Home Depot receives it, then up to 10 business days for your bank

If a refund hasn’t appeared after that, see refund taking too long? for how to trace it.

Returning without a receipt

Home Depot staff can find most card purchases if you bring the card, and purchases made with cards saved to your homedepot.com account appear in your online Purchase History for 24 months. If there’s no record at all, management may offer store credit when the original price can be determined, and you’ll need ID. Our Home Depot no-receipt return guide covers what to bring and what to expect.

Tips before you return

  • Check the category first. A 90-day store can still mean 30 days or 48 hours for what you bought.
  • Keep factory packaging on tools and equipment until you’re sure, because some returns require it sealed.
  • Pay with the card you’ll use for returns. It doubles as your receipt at the service desk.
  • Use your Pro Xtra or credit card account for big projects: the 365-day window and purchase history are worth having.
  • For defects after the window, most tools and appliances carry a manufacturer warranty. Our warranty checklist lists what to have ready.
