Lowe's Return Without a Receipt: How Lookup Works and What ID You Need

By the Returns & Refunds team · How we research

Summary

  • Lowe's requires proof of purchase, but it will try to find it from your payment card or digital wallet, phone number, order number, or MyLowe's Rewards account.
  • For a refund without a receipt, you must show a driver's license, state ID, military ID, alien registration card, or border crossing card.
  • MyLowe's Rewards saves in-store purchases to your account, so you can print the receipt yourself.
  • The item still has to be inside its return window: 90 days for most items, 30 days or 48 hours for some categories.

Lowe’s officially needs proof of purchase for every return, but it defines proof broadly and will search for it. In practice, if you paid by card or used your MyLowe’s Rewards account, a lost receipt rarely matters.

What Lowe’s can use to find your purchase

  • The credit or debit card or digital wallet you paid with
  • Your phone number (if it’s on a MyLowe’s Rewards account)
  • Your MyLowe’s Rewards or MyLowe’s Pro Rewards account
  • The order number for online orders
  • A physical or electronic receipt, if you find one

Bring as many of these as you can. A successful lookup makes it a normal return, refunded to your original payment method.

If you have a MyLowe’s account, sign in on lowes.com or the Lowe’s app and open your purchase history. It includes in-store purchases linked to your account, and you can print the transaction details before you go.

The ID requirement

To process a refund without a receipt, Lowe’s requires one of these:

  • Driver’s license
  • State ID card
  • Military ID
  • Alien registration card
  • Border crossing card

Information from the ID is used to record and verify non-receipted returns.

If Lowe’s can’t find the purchase

If nothing matches (usually a cash purchase with no rewards account), the store may decline the return or offer limited options such as store credit or an exchange. Ask the service desk what they can do, and be ready to show ID.

Return windows still apply

Losing the receipt doesn’t buy you extra time: 90 days for most items, 30 days for TVs, electronics, liquid paint, water heaters, and most outdoor power equipment, and 48 hours for major appliances. See the full Lowe’s return policy guide.

If the item is defective

For a product that failed after the return window, go to the manufacturer’s warranty. Proof of the purchase date, even a card statement, plus the serial number is usually enough to start. See the warranty claim checklist.

Make sure it doesn’t happen again

Join MyLowe’s Rewards (it’s free) and give your phone number at checkout. Every purchase is then saved to your account, which works as a permanent receipt. Our guide to returns without a receipt compares how 30+ other stores handle this.
